PRELUDE: “Mighty Are Thy Works, O Lord” Gary Davidson
INTROIT:
CALL TO WORSHIP Luke 19: 29-40
When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the
Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,
saying,
"Go into the village ahead of you, and
as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden.
Untie it and bring it here.
If anyone asks you,
Choir:
‘Why are you untying it?'
just say this,
Choir: 'The Lord needs it.'"
So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,
"Why are you
untying the colt?"
They said,
Choir: "The Lord needs it."
Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the
colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their
cloaks on the road. As he was now
approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the
disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of
power that they had seen, saying,
"Blessed is the king who comes in the
name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!"
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,
Choir:
"Teacher, order your disciples to stop."
He answered,
"I tell you, if these were silent, the
stones would
shout out."

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:
Isaiah claims to have a gift for teaching and that
gift must have been magical or how could he make the claim:
to know a
word that would sustain the weary.
Certainly we wonder what the etymology of this
supernatural word could be…
that it would allow the hearer to endure
beatings, spitting and hair pulling…
And while this shameful behavior was going on the
student, teacher, servant…
Was not
disgraced… was not put to shame.
You’re crazy!
That couldn’t be true!
No word could possibly see one through
such humiliation.
Oh, but there is a word or phrase that can do this…
“The
Lord God helps me.”
It was these words that saw Joseph and Jeremiah
through imprisonment… that kept Abraham, Sarah, Hannah and others hoping when
there appeared to be no hope.
Lord, fortify me with the promise of
Your help in time of trouble. Amen.
HYMN 2137: “Would I Have Answered When You Called”
THE GOSPEL: Luke 23: 32-38 pg. 919
SERMON:
Decisions of
faith are personal decisions. It is for
us to choose if we will believe in God.
Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions. When we choose to follow Jesus we are
choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church. If you would like to confirm the decision you
have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this
congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the
worship leader about your decision.
