 *CALL TO WORSHIP                     Psalm 27: 1-6

The LORD is my light and my salvation;

whom shall I fear?

The LORD is the stronghold of my life;

of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh-- my adversaries and foes—

they shall stumble and fall.

Though an army encamp against me,

my heart shall not fear;

though war rise up against me,

yet I will be confident.

One thing I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after:

to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.

For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;

he will set me high on a rock.

Now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy;

I will sing and make melody to the LORD.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER

A chapter earlier in Luke, Jesus had warned his disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees…

Yet here they appear to be concerned for Jesus’ safety.

And they may well have been concerned for Jesus’ safety and their own, because they feared Herod.

          They feared his power over life and death.

Jesus said the leaven of the Pharisees was hypocrisy and such hypocrisy may be found in any religion that becomes too established…

Claiming to live in awe of God’s, their true awe is reserved for earthly rulers.

Once you have buildings and status in community to preserve and protect…

It is easy to allow the “powers that be” to set the agenda.

Lord God, help us to be like Jesus—attending to the work at hand today and tomorrow,

And when our work is complete, we trust that You, like a Mother Hen, have the power to gather us under your wing. Amen.

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
