*CALL TO WORSHIP                      Psalm 124

If it had not been the LORD who was on our side --let Israel now say--

if it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when our enemies attacked us, then they would have swallowed us up alive,

when their anger was kindled against us;  then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us; then over us would have gone the raging waters.

Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as prey to their teeth.

We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

On the first Sunday of the month I bring out a little pitcher with oil in it for the anointing of those who are sick, but almost no one ever comes up…

Sorry, that’s just not how we were brought

          up.

Sometimes I wonder if you don’t come because you are concerned with my righteousness and hence the efficacy of my prayers.

Its not really that…  It is more that the prayer and oil thing is a little mystical for our rational world.

Our world is a rational world…

and in it, healing is a product of Medical     Science.

Sometimes I question if the oil is here for physical healing or spiritual wholeness.

Could it be that the oil is there to remind us, at our lowest ebb, that we bear a connection to God and each other.

Lord, help us to pray with the Psalmist: “Thou anointest my head with oil,

          My cup runneth over.”  Amen.

*INVITATION HYMN 461:  “Savior, Teach Me Day by Day”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
