*CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm
22: 1-11
My
God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from
the words of my groaning?
O my God, I cry by day, but you do not
answer; and by night, but find no rest.
Yet
you are holy, enthroned on the praises of
In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted,
and you delivered them.
To
you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.
But I am a worm, and not human; scorned by
others, and despised by the people.
All
who see me mock at me; they make mouths at me, they shake their heads;
"Commit your cause to the LORD; let
him deliver-- let him rescue the one in whom he delights!"
Yet
it was you who took me from the womb; you kept me safe on my mother's breast.
On you I was cast from my birth, and since
my mother bore me you have been my God.
UNISON: Do not be far from me, for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:
Many
of us have known the kind of deep despair Job is talking about here.
Job’s faith is clearly shaken. Is Job saying
he no longer believes in God?
Job’s
unexplained suffering has shaken his faith, and terrified him, but he still
wants to “lay his case” before God and “fill his mouth with arguments”.
He seems to feel a tension between
the destructiveness he has experienced
and his basic trust in God’s
goodness.
Unison: Compassionate God, help us
to feel your understanding presence, even in the midst of our tensions,
terrors, and despair. May we find
companionship in you, even when our human relationships disappoint us.

New Dimensions”

*INVITATION HYMN: “O Spirit of the Living God” (See
Insert)
Decisions of faith are personal decisions. It is for us to choose if we will believe in
God. Decisions of faith are also public
and corporate decisions. When we choose
to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the
Church. If you would like to confirm the
decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a
part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and
speak with the worship leader about your decision.
