INTROIT
*CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 127: 1-2
Except
the Lord build the house,
they labour in
vain that build it:
except
the Lord keep the city,
the watchman waketh but in vain.
It is
vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows:
for so God
giveth the beloved sleep.
Lo,
children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is God’s reward.
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are
children of the youth.
Happy
is the one whose quiver is full of them:
they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with
the enemies in the gate.

HEBREW BIBLE: Ruth 3: 1-5; 4: 13-17 pg. 232 Read by: Emily Weimert
RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:
At
the time when Naomi had sent Ruth to the threshing floor, the two of them were
so desperately poor that their only source of food was the grain left in the
fields after the harvest.
They probably didn’t have two coins to rub
together.
If
someone were to have raised the question of what these two could possibly have
contributed to society the answer would have appeared to be obvious…
Nothing.
A
widow woman, whose property was gone, whose sons had died, her only asset--a
foreign born daughter-in-law…
Even if these two people were to have
faith, they would still be hopeless.
But
this was not how Boaz saw it…
and more importantly it was not how God
viewed it.
God,
who made Abraham, a wandering Aramean, to be the father of Your people Israel,
and who called us to live as ‘strangers and sojourners’ on this earth…
Help us never to look with distain on the
least of your children… bring to our minds the fact that David came from such
humble roots. Amen.
*HYMN 2175: “Together We Serve”
THE GOSPEL : Mark 12: 38-44 pg. 881
SERMON: “On Giving”
*INVITATION HYMN 605: “Because I Have Been Given Much”
Decisions of
faith are personal decisions. It is for
us to choose if we will believe in God.
Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions. When we choose to follow Jesus we are
choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church. If you would like to confirm the decision you
have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this
congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the
worship leader about your decision.
