PRELUDE      “Andante Religioso”     by Franz Abt Ritter

INTROIT

*CALL TO WORSHIP                                  Psalm 98

O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

God’s right hand and his holy arm have gotten the

victory.

The LORD has made known this victory;

God has revealed vindication in the sight of the nations.

The Lord has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our

God.

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;

break forth into joyous song and sing praises.

Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody.

With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD.

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who live in it. Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy at the presence of the LORD,

for God is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

Should these Romans be trusted?

            Yes, they are speaking in tongues.

But Aramaic is hardly their first language…

            If they could speak it at all.

They are Roman soldiers, the people who took Jesus to Calvary,

They stood guard at the tomb, and then spread that nasty rumor that we had stolen the body.

Why should we be so quick to trust that the Holy Spirit is now in them.

Shouldn’t we give it a few weeks?  Do we have to baptize them now?

God’s whose Spirit moves, mysteriously on    Your command and not ours.

Forgive us if we are not as quick to believe as You might want us to be.

Forgive us for not wanting to appear naïve in front of the world.

Forgive us for being more concerned with holiness in the community… instead of Your surprising work of transformation.

UNISON:  Come, Holy Spirit!  Move in our hearts.

*HYMN 245:   “Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart”

*INVITATION HYMN 182:  “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
