PRELUDE:            “Think On Me”        L. J. Scott

INTROIT:

*CALL TO WORSHIP:                                 Psalm 51: 1-12

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever

before me.

Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment.

Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me.

You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.  Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.

Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

HEBREW BIBLE:     Jeremiah 31: 31-34                  pg. 680.  read by:  Tammy Geelhaar

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER

The critical irony latent in these words of Jeremiah eludes us because we don’t read Hebrew…

“I will make a new covenant… I will put my law within them…”

The Hebrew word for covenant is “to cut”…

          So covenanting was a surgical

          procedure.

The surgery of the old covenant was performed by a mohel at a bris…

This surgery was the cutting of circumcision, performed on male children, on the eighth day.

The surgery of the new covenant was less time and gender specific…

God was to be the surgeon, and the cutting was to be on hearts.

We find ourselves wondering, God, will this surgery be elective or imposed on all?

If it is to be elective… may it be performed on us today.  Amen.

*HYMN 291:           “Beneath The Cross of Jesus”

THE GOSPEL:                 John 12: 20-33                  pg. 936

*INVITATION HYMN 277:   “Take My Life and Let It Be Consecrated”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
