PRELUDE:              Prelude on “St. Peter”  by A. R. Reingle

INTROIT:

*CALL TO WORSHIP:                     Psalm 19: 7-14

The law of the LORD is perfect,

reviving the soul;

the testimony of the LORD is sure,

making wise the simple;

the precepts of the LORD are right,

rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the LORD is pure,

 enlightening the eyes;

the fear of the LORD is clean,

enduring for ever;

the ordinances of the LORD are true,

and righteous altogether.

More to be desired are they than gold,

even much fine gold;

sweeter also than honey

and drippings of the honeycomb.

Moreover by them is thy servant warned;

in keeping them there is great reward.

But who can discern his errors?

Clear thou me from hidden faults.

Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins;

let them not have dominion over me!

Then I shall be blameless,

and innocent of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight,

O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER

To us the words of the Ten Commandments make perfect sense…

There should be no problem posting them in public buildings.

But there is a problem, at least for some people, because the first four laws presume a belief in God.

There are those who don’t believe that God is one… that idols and misusing God’s name are wrong… or that there should be a day of rest to remember God’s work in creating.

And sadly if one doesn’t believe such things about God…

The reason for some of the other commandments can become somewhat vague.

God, who is central to our understanding of human life and behavior, helps us to live out Your commandments, even if others reject them.

 Give us courage to walk, by faith, in Your divine light, even while others, are content to walk in light of this world’s reason. Amen.

*HYMN 601:              “Teach Me, O Lord, I Pray”

THE LETTERS:             I Corinthians 1: 18-25         pg. 991

SERMON:      “Making Sense of the Non-Sense”

*INVITATION HYMN 2246:   “Deep in the Shadows of the Past”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
