INTROIT:

*CALL TO WORSHIP:                                 Psalm 22: 23-31

You who fear the LORD, give praise! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify the lord; and stand in awe, all you offspring of Israel! For God did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted; the Lord did not hide his face from me, but heard when I cried out.

From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will pay before those who fear God.

The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD. May your hearts live forever!  All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD; and all the families of the nations shall worship before God.

For dominion belongs to the LORD, and the Lord rules over the nations.

To God, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down; before the Lord shall bow all who go down to the dust, and I shall live for God.

Posterity will serve God; future generations will be told about the Lord, and proclaim God’s deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that Our God has done it.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER

It appears that during Jesus’ ministry he spoke openly of the probability even inevitability of his suffering…

We don’t like such negative thinking; who knows it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Jesus even appeared to understand, that the inescapable conclusion to following the course in life, which he had chosen to follow, would be death…

What a bummer… Jesus, we can live with life being full of “ups and downs…” but you make it sound so down.

“For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.”

Jesus, Is this one of those: “Two roads diverged in the wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference…” things?

Our world is full of well worn ways, some which appear to offer such promise, yet most will lead to destruction…

Jesus, who is the “way, truth and life,” help us to find our way in you, and in following Your way may we not so much fear death as find life, in your eternal Now.  Amen.

*HYMN 184:             “Jesus Is All the World to Me”

HEBREW BIBLE:         Genesis 17: 1-7, 15-16        pg. 12

*INVITATION  HYMN 2196:  “We Walk By Faith”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
