PRELUDE “The Path of the Just” by Edward
Broughton
*CALL
TO WORSHIP Pslam 78:
1-4, 12-16
Give
ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I
will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known, that our ancestors
have told us.
We
will not hide them from their children;
we will tell to the coming generation the glorious
deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that God has done.
In
the sight of their ancestors he worked marvels in the
He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and
made the waters stand like a heap.
In
the daytime he led them with a cloud,
and all night long with a fiery light.
He
split rocks open in the wilderness,
and gave them
drink abundantly as from the
deep.
He
made streams come out of the rock,
and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

us Lord, the grace of giving,

a spirit large and free,
That
ourselves and all our living
We
may offer unto Thee.

GOSPEL: Matthew

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:
The initial
question was asked to address the issue of Jesus’ authority to teach in the
But
Jesus turned the question around and made it a matter of “doing the will of the
Father.”
In defense of the
chief priests and elders, I am not sure that I would be ready to say…
That
prostitutes and tax collectors are necessarily doing the will of the Father.
The parable Jesus
told would appear to indicate that what people say is nowhere near as important
as what they do.
The
first son said he wouldn’t work but did… the second said he would work but
didn’t.
The proof wasn’t in
the words but in the work.
Lord
God, we have pledged our loyalty and devotion to you. We pray our actions would be consistent with
our words. Amen.

“Life on the Other Side”
*INVITATION
HYMN 2175: “Together We Serve”
Decisions of
faith are personal decisions. It is for
us to choose if we will believe in God.
Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions. When we choose to follow Jesus we are
choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church. If you would like to confirm the decision you
have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this
congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the
worship leader about your decision.
