INTROIT

*CALL TO WORSHIP:                                   Psalm 131

O LORD, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high;

I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.

But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother;

my soul is like the weaned child that is

with me.

O Israel, hope in the LORD

from this time on and forevermore.

CHILDREN’S TIME:

HEBREW BIBLE:               Isaiah 49: 8-16a             pg. 630     read by Adam Highcove

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

It is impossible to read this passage and not think of the children of Israel to whom it was written…

A nation which had been captives for seventy years in Babylon.

It is impossible to read this passage, in the time after the Holocaust, and not think of the children of Israel who also read these words.

There are about 13 million Jewish people alive today, but six million died in the Holocaust.

There are Christians in this world who would naively say… “Forget all that…”

“It was God’s way to help you Jews reclaim Israel: ‘a covenant to the people’.”

Would we Christians be as quick to be consoled or speak of  God’s  “nursing mother” providence, if three or four hundred million Christians were killed over a five or six year period?

We call you ‘our Lord,’ and You are, but You are also the Lord of all.  As people, who might call on you by other names, suffer catastrophes, in lands like Burma or China, may we embrace these sisters and brothers, Your children, with the arms of the crucified Christ.  Amen.

*HYMN 2177:      “Wounded World that Cries for Healing”

GOSPEL:                    Matthew 6: 24-34                    pg. 840

SERMON:               “The Age of Anxiety”

*INVITATION HYMN 447:           “Trust and Obey”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
