PRELUDE

INTROIT:

*CALL TO WORSHIP:                                   Psalm 16: 1-9

Protect me, O God,

for in you I take refuge.

I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord;

I have no good apart from you."

As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble,

in whom is all my delight.

Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows; their drink offerings of blood

I will not pour out or take their names upon my

lips.

The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup;

you hold my lot.

The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;

I have a goodly heritage.

I bless the LORD who gives me counsel;

in the night also my heart instructs me.

I keep the LORD always before me;

 because God is at my right hand, I shall not be

moved.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;

my body also rests secure.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER

These words of Peter were directed to a Jewish population who had gathered for the feast of Pentecost…

            Pilgrims from near and far.

And in his opening words Peter accused them of crucifying Jesus, the Messiah,

How could people from such far flung areas be guilty of the death of this Jesus?

Most of these people had not been in Jerusalem for Passover…

Certainly they couldn’t be held accountable for the actions of others.

Maybe it was his later exhortation that convicted this crowd that they needed to do something…

            “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”

God of us all, we know that there is a corporate nature to sin. Just as washing a red sock with the whites can discolor the whole load…

            So the actions of others can taint our being.

It may be the sins of the parents being visited on their children…

It could be the action of neighbors which has tainted our entire neighborhood… nation… world.

We may have disagreed but the stain is still on us.

Forgive us Lord.  Wash us in the waters of baptism and make us pure, and send Your Holy Spirit to give us power to live in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

*HYMN 273:                “Freely, Freely”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
