CALL TO WORSHIP                                      Matthew 21: 1-11

When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them,

CHOIR:  "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this,

ALL:  'The Lord needs them.'

CHOIR:  And he will send them immediately. "

This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying,

CHOIR:  "Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,

ALL:  "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"

When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking,

CHOIR:  "Who is this?"

The crowds were saying,

ALL:  "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee."

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

We should have known long ago…

            Torture doesn’t work

Especially when one believes themselves to be the servant of God…

“The Lord GOD has opened my ears and I was not rebellious.”

Those convinced that they are serving God are willing to endure almost any suffering in service.

“I gave my back to the smiters…”

With confidence, their face is set…

“The one who vindicates me is near.”

But is the cause just, and more importantly is God truly being served?

God, there is no “MapQuest” for the human soul, and even if there was, we would still have cause to question it being inerrant. Help us to follow You with deep commitment, as well as fear and trembling… so that in loving you we never step on or crush our neighbor.  Amen.

HYMN 2213:         “Healer of Our Every Ill

THE GOSPEL:  Matthew 26: 14-16, 27: 1-10            pg. 861

*INVITATION HYMN 2146:  “His Eye Is on the Sparrow”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
