*CALL TO WORSHIP:                                   Psalm 46: 1-5

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear,

though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;

God will help it when the morning dawns.

*HYMN 20:   “Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above”

EXTENDED LIFE OF THE CHURCH

ANTHEM:      “Come To The Banquet ”   by  J. M. Martin

HEBREW BIBLE:      Genesis 6:11-18; 7:24; 8:14-19     pg. 5     read by: Helen Ross

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

Some believe that the event described in the story of Noah and the flood was the moment when the channel, known to us as the Bosphorus, opened and the Mediterranean Sea rushed in to fill the basin we now know as the Black Sea.  It was a cataclysmic event which would have destroyed all life for thousands of square miles.

Obviously theologians, back then, read this as God’s judgment poured out on the wicked people of that land.

Such judgments are still made today and not always by theologians.  Actress Sharon Stone recently pronounced the earthquake in China to be “Bad karma” for China’s treatment of Tibet

Is that how our God acts… killing tens of thousands, displacing hundreds of thousands… all for sin, which was not really their own?

After the flood Noah proved himself not to be above sin, and neither are we.

God who is acquainted with all our ways, and yet has not acted to end our walk on this earth, we thank you for your graceful patience.  Forgive us for the sin of our hands… and the sin from which we have benefited, and help us to strive to walk more faithfully in your way.  Amen.

SHARING THE BREAD                                            (#371)

I come with joy to meet my Lord,

Forgiven, loved, and free,

In awe and wonder to recall

His life laid down for me.

As Christ breaks bread and bids us share,

Each proud division ends,

The love that made us, makes us one,

And strangers now are friends.

SHARING THE CUP                                                  (#330)

Amazing grace!  How sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found,

Was blind but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved;

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed.

GREET EACH OTHER WITH THE PEACE OF CHRIST
