*CALL TO WORSHIP:                                   Psalm 71: 1-6

In you, O LORD, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;
incline your ear to me and save me.
Be to me a rock of refuge, a strong fortress, to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.
Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of the unjust and cruel.
For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth.
Upon you I have leaned from my birth; it was you who took me from my mother's womb. My praise is continually of you.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

“Love is a many splendored thing,

            It’s the April rose that only grows in the early spring.

Once on a high and windy hill,

In the morning mist two lovers kissed and the world stood still.”

Baloney!  April roses and the rotation of the earth are a function of science not love.

You mean Love is not a many splendored thing?

No, but the splendor of love, while possibly being experienced in roses or kisses, is a product of something far greater…

It begins to grow in ones who believe that “God so loves the world,” and also loves me.

Love is the hard work of responding to that divine love in such a fashion that all people, all creation, sense God’s  love in our lives.

God of love, creation points to the endless breadth of Your love, and Jesus’ death and resurrection demonstrate it’s depths, reassure us that nothing will ever separate us from that love… and knowing it cannot be exhausted, help us to share your love as if it was boundless.  Amen.

HYMN 208:       “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”

GOSPEL:                           Luke 4: 14-30                   pg.  892

SERMON:                   “The City That Reads”

*INVITATION HYMN 261:   “Wonderful Words of Life”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
