PRELUDE      “I Must tell Jesus”  R.J. Hughs/E. A. Hoffman

INTROIT

 *CALL TO WORSHIP                       `Psalm 29

Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,

ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name;

 worship the LORD in holy splendor.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders,

the LORD, over mighty waters.

The voice of the LORD is powerful;

the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;

 the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.

He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.

The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;

the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the LORD causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say,

"Glory!"

The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;

the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.

May the LORD give strength to his people!

May the LORD bless his people with peace!

RESPONSIVE CALL TO COMMITTMENT:

Mark’s Gospel …

            began with this story.

And all of the gospels, early on, give accounts…

            of Jesus, and John the Baptizer, and the dove

            from heaven.

Matthew indicates Jesus’ baptism took place to “fulfill all righteousness.”

            This wasn’t the righteousness of the law.

This was a righteousness of fulfillment… fulfillment of prophetic words, and the hopes of a people.

            and the fulfillment came in Jesus’ daily walk.

He came through the water, as did the Jewish people, but he didn’t come to a promised land…

            he came instead as a promise to the all the lands.

Like Jesus we have come through the waters of baptism.  As we come place our hand in the water today may we remember the water of our baptism and the commitment made to God in Christ.

May we be renewed by the Spirit, to serve God in this world as the “Body of Christ”.  Amen.

*HYMN 2130:                “The Summons”

As we sing the second verse of the Hymn together, come down the center aisle (beginning with the choir and those in front), place your hand in the water in the bowl, and renew your baptismal vow.  You can make the sign of the cross or simply remember that you were baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
