PRELUDE “Prayer At Dawn” Edward Broughton
INTROIT:
*CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 32: 1-7
Happy are those whose transgression
is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no
iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
While I
kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy
upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged
my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said,
"I
will confess my transgressions to the LORD," and you forgave the guilt of
my sin.
Therefore let all who are faithful
offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not
reach them.
You are a
hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad
cries of deliverance.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:
I have
always avoided those wilderness experiences… Too little to eat… No near-by
medical care… and no one to hang with…
Thank goodness we live in the city.
Yeah, the
city may not be perfect, but we have friends, which is nice, even if they don’t
worship us.
Better still, you don’t have to make bread out of
stones.
It may be
easier to recognize temptation in the wilderness…
The air is so clear.
In our
modern urban/urbane world, with all of the busyness and distractions… the pain
relievers and sleeping aids… temptation is hard to define.
God, who knows the human condition… God, who understands
the subtle nature of the tempter, be with us in this Lenten season. Clear the impurities away from our eyes, and
help us to see your way in our wilderness.
Amen.
*HYMN 2105: “Jesus Tempted in the Desert”
HEBREW BIBLE: Genesis 2: 15-17, 3: 1-7 pg. 2.

*INVITATION HYMN 330:
“Amazing Grace”
Decisions of
faith are personal decisions. It is for
us to choose if we will believe in God.
Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions. When we choose to follow Jesus we are
choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church. If you would like to confirm the decision you
have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this
congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the
worship leader about your decision.
