INTROIT

*CALL TO WORSHIP                        Psalm 91:1-6, 14-16

You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the LORD,

"My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I

trust."

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; God’s will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge;

The Lord’s faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday.

Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name.

When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them.

With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation.

CHILDREN’S TIME:

HEBREW BIBLE:         Jeremiah 32: 1-3a, 6-15       pg. 681     read by Ruth Kulkarni

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

When I was flying in the service you would frequently hear that a friend has “bought the farm”…

It was a euphemism for dying.

That statement would certainly take on different connotations in this story…

Jerusalem was under siege…certainly Jeremiah was surrounded by death.

And the purchase of his cousin’s land must have appeared to be an ill advised investment.

Jerusalem was about to be captured, who would honor this deed?

At issue for Jeremiah was not whether he would ever take possession of that piece of property…

He wanted to show the Jewish people that they would again possess that place.

UNISON:  Lord God, even when it would appear that the cause is hopeless, may we remember that you are our strong hold, and we are “prisoners of hope.”

*HYMN 64:               “God Will Take Care of You”

THE GOSPEL:                        Luke 16: 19-31            pg. 910

SERMON:                       “Unfortunate Oversight”

*INVITATION HYMN 60:   “Be Thou My Vision”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
