May God be gracious to us and bless us
            and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
So that Your way may be known upon earth,
            Your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
            let all the peoples praise you.
Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
            for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the
            nations upon earth.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
            let all the peoples praise you.
The earth has yielded its increase;
            God, our God, has blessed us.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

The advent of television has brought such an onslaught of advertising—every ten or fifteen minutes we are bombarded with a fresh barrage of commercials.

            Is it any wonder that we are consumed

            with possessing what the world has.

The commandments told us that we were not to covet anything that is our neighbor’s.

            But how can we be a good American and

            not want what everyone else has.

So it is disconcerting for us to hear Jesus tell his disciples:

            “My peace I give to you.  I do not give to

            you as the world gives.”

We want peace just like the peace the world has.

            The end of war… the fight… the

            hostilities… we want the peace of just

            being left alone.

Yet, Your peace isn’t like the world’s peace.  Your peace is one which becomes perfect in action not passivity… in community not isolation.

            Help us to long for Your peace O God.

            Help us to find it in care for our neighbors

            and stewardship of Your earth.  Amen.

*HYMN 611:  “Let Your Heart Be Broken”

SCRIPTURE:  Acts 16: 9-15, pg. 963.

SERMON:   “Not As Advertised”

*INVITATION HYMN 2175:      “Together We Serve”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
