PRELUDE “O Lord Most Holy” by F. Abt
INTROIT
*CALL TO WORSHIP
“In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form
and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was
moving over the face of the waters.”
Spirit which moved over the waters in the
beginning, move over them now as well.
The
Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of
God, who delivered a people through the water,
deliver us as well.
John
answered them all, “I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is
coming, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize
you with the holy spirit and with fire.
God, whose fire is not quenched but fueled by
water, burn in our hearts always.

HEBREW
BIBLE: Jeremiah 1: 4-10 pg. 647 read
by Bruce Edwards
RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:
Jeremiah said: “Truly I do not
know how to speak, for I am only a boy.”
“Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’; for you shall go to all to whom
I send you…”
When
Isaiah spoke of the shoot which world grow from the stump of Jesse he spoke
about animals, wild and domestic, living together...
“And a little child shall lead them.”
But
how can a child be a prophet? How could
they lead us?
They haven’t learned the ways of the world yet.
Exactly,
a child like Sarah hasn’t yet learned to make all the ‘necessary’ concessions to
the world. Maybe the questioning, hope,
purity, and zeal of a little child will more faithfully lead us toward the way
of God.
Holy God, keep us ever open to the possibility of Your Spirit
moving in unsuspected people and places.
May the way things are, never blind us to the way things might be. Amen.

HYMN 305: “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus”
Decisions of
faith are personal decisions. It is for
us to choose if we will believe in God.
Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions. When we choose to follow Jesus we are
choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church. If you would like to confirm the decision you
have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this
congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the
worship leader about your decision.
