INTROIT

*CALL TO WORSHIP                                    Psalm 19: 7 – 14

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul;

the decrees of the LORD are sure, making wise the simple;

the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eyes;

the fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever;

the ordinances of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb.

Moreover by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

But who can detect their errors?

Clear me from hidden faults.

Keep back your servant also from the insolent; do not let them have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

It sounds like some kind of Talmudic Academy on the lawn…

          like Hebrew school outdoors.

 Then there was that bowing down with their faces to the ground…

          It sounds almost Islamic.

But it was a historic moment for the children of Judah who had been captives in Babylon,

It was the first reading of the law on returning to Jerusalem… It was the renewal of the covenant.

It was read with interpretations, because the meanings were not obvious…

          “This is what God is saying today.”

It was a central moment…

          A centering moment.

Israel believed that its relationship to God was defined by laws.

Holy God, we struggle with the concept of a nation standing in relationship to God, and a nation allowing its people the freedom of choice in the areas of religion.  Guide us by Your Spirit, to live in openness, and to create a society where neighbors will be treated as if they bear Your image. Amen.
