PRELUDE “O
Lord, How Shall I Meet You”
By Johann
Cruger/K. T. Kosche
INTROIT:
*CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 1
Blessed is the man who walks not
in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of
the LORD,
and on
his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by
streams of water, that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not
wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so, but are
like chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore
the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of
the righteous;
for the LORD knows the way of
the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
*HYMN 410: “It Is Well with My Soul”
EXTENDED LIFE OF THE CHURCH
ANTHEM: “By Faith” by Cindy Berry
*OFFERING We
give Thee but Thine own,
What e'er the
gift may be;
All that we have
is Thine alone,
A trust, O Lord,
from Thee.

GOSPEL

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:
In
Luke’s Gospel, Jesus didn’t pull any punches.
He didn’t speak of the poor in spirit…
He said blessed are the poor.
He
also left no doubt about the quality of character (beatitudes) which made one
beautiful…
He spoke woes about character flaws which detracted
from inner beauty.
His
words challenged those who accepted, without question, Deuteronomic theology…
Wealth…plenty…laughter…recognition… were not
necessarily signs of God’s favor.
God
of us all, rich and poor… hungry and full… mourners and celebrants…
Help us not to look on our neighbors as either
blessed or cursed, but as our sisters and brothers. Guide us as we seek ways to care for their
needs and speak of our oneness in You.
Amen.
*HYMN 2223: “They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love”
HEBREW BIBLE: Jeremiah 17: 5 – 10 pg. 665
SERMON: “I Think I Can Handle It”
*INVITATION HYMN 2203: “In
His Time”
Decisions of
faith are personal decisions. It is for
us to choose if we will believe in God.
Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions. When we choose to follow Jesus we are
choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church. If you would like to confirm the decision you
have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this
congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the
worship leader about your decision.
