LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLE

INTROIT

CALL TO WORSHIP                          Psalm 72: 1-7

Give the king your justice, O God,

and your righteousness to a king's son.

May he judge your people with righteousness,

and your poor with justice.

May the mountains yield prosperity for the people,

and the hills, in righteousness.

May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,

give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor.

May he live while the sun endures, and as long as the moon,

throughout all generations.

May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,

like showers that water the earth.

In his days may righteousness flourish and peace abound,

until the moon is no more.

*HYMN 127:          “The King of Glory Comes”

EXTENDED LIFE OF THE CHURCH

*OFFERING:                                                              #115

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!

Bow down before Him, His glory proclaim;

With gold of obedience and incense of lowliness,

Kneel and adore Him: the Lord is His name.

OFFERTORY:     “The Coventry Carol”   Flute:    Martha Wylie

HEBREW BIBLE:     Isaiah 11: 1-10                        Pg. 595

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

All creation including all God’s people, including all religions are waiting on tiptoe to see the dawning of Peace on earth.

We wait for a shoot to come from Jesse’s stump.

How can a shoot come from a stump?

How can righteousness and peace be born on

            earth?

Can the laws of nature be suspended, with lion and lamb lying down together?

Will children ever be safe playing with

            venomous snakes?

Darwin said that the “survival of the fittest” is nature’s way…

Jesus called us to a higher way.

UNISON:  Lord, help us to walk in the light of your love. Amen.
