PRELUDE:                    “Where Cross The Crowded Ways”     By Roger C. Wilson from Gardiner’s “Sacred Melodies”

*INTROIT 2226:           “Bind Us Together”

*CALL TO WORSHIP:           Psalm 80: 1-2: 8-12,14-15, 19

Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh.

Stir up your might, and come to save us!

You brought a vine out of Egypt;

you drove out the nations and planted it.

You cleared the ground for it;

it took deep root and filled the land.

The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches; it sent out its branches to the sea, and its shoots to the River.

Why then have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?

Turn again, O God of hosts; look down from heaven, and see;

have regard for this vine, the stock that your right hand planted.

Restore us, O LORD God of hosts;

let your face shine, that we may be saved.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

In a land where potable water was hard to find, Jewish families weekly, on the Sabbath, said this prayer:

‘Blessed are you, O Lord, Ruler of the World, who creates the fruit of the vine. ‘

Vineyards, vines, grapes and wine…

            source of life to people in an arid land.

Vineyards became almost sacred places…

Vineyards, vines, grapes and wine… sustained a people.

It is not surprising that prophets spoke of Israel as God’s vineyard… God’s vine:

They were God’s blessing to the families of the earth.

In John’s Gospel Jesus said: ‘I am the vine, you are the branches.”

So, in a way we are to join Judaism in

blessing the earth.

So what kind of fruit will we bear?  Will it be the good fruit one would expect from God’s vineyard… from Jesus the vine?

May our lives and works produce fruit which will give the world cause to join Israel in prayer: ‘Blessed are you, O Lord, Ruler of the World, who creates the fruit of the vine. ‘
