PRELUDE: “Sweet Is The Work” By J.
J. McClellan
*INTROIT
499: “Open
Our Eyes Lord”
*CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm
50: 1-5, 6-9
The mighty
one, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to
its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection
of beauty, God shines forth.
Our God comes and does not keep silence, before the Lord is a
devouring fire, with a mighty tempest all around.
God calls to
the heavens above and to the earth, that the faithful may be judged:
"Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with
me by sacrifice!" "Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, I
will testify against you.
I am God,
your God. Not for your sacrifices do I
rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me. I will not accept a bull from your house, or
goats from your folds.
Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to
the Most High.
Call on me in
the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me." But to the wicked God says: "What right
have you to recite my statutes, or take my covenant on your lips?
For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:
If you ever
saw the musical Oliver, you probably have, fixed in your mind, the scene of
Oliver making his way forward to the pot of gruel and holding his bowl high…
“More food Sir, please.”
That pitiful face, those eyes on the
verge of tears…
What
kind of fiend could possibly deny such
a
request?
Certainly it isn’t wrong to ask for what
we need just to sustain life…
We
pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.”
But are any of us content with merely
bread?
I’m cutting
back on carbs.
So what… and how much do we really need?
What
is enough, and when is enough…
enough?
Is it wrong to argue with a sibling over
an inheritance?
Should
we tolerate being cheated out of our
birthright?
Is it wrong for us to save... To build a
bigger barn?
So
was Joseph wrong in
lean
years.
UNISON: Help us Lord, to discern between
justice and coveting, between frugality and greed. Amen.
