EXTENDED LIFE OF THE CHURCH

PRELUDE “Jesus Spreads His Banner O’er Us”
by J. Scriveyner/F. H. Barthelemon

INTROIT 2086: “Open Our Eyes”

*CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 14
Fools say in their hearts, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is no one who does good.
The LORD looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.
They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse; there is no one who does good, no, not one.
Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the LORD?
There they shall be in great terror, for God is with the company of the righteous.
You would confound the plans of the poor, but the LORD is their refuge.
O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of God’s people,
Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

*HYMN 2271: “Come! Come! Everybody Worship”

INVOCATION Followed by the Lord’s Prayer

SOLO: Soloist: Lucy Moore

PRAYER FROM THE PEOPLE Barbara Ann Geelhaar

*OFFERING We give Thee but Thine own,
What e'er the gift may be;
All that we have is Thine alone,
A trust, O Lord, from Thee.

OFFERTORY: “Morning Meditation”
by Richard Blake

CHILDREN’S TIME

HEBREW BIBLE: II Samuel 11: 1-15 pg. 272
read by Candace Geelhaar

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:
Where was she taking this bath?
It must have been out in plain sight.
She had to know that she could be seen.
Bathsheba seems to have been asking for this.
What was David to do? He was entrapped!
Boys will be boys.
We hear the arguments in cases of rape and sexual indiscretion, and especially in these high profile cases.
In David’s, and Bill’s, and Kobe’s…
Again and again we hear of people with power involved in sexual scandals,
And we wonder, were they just abusing their power or was this other person seeking fame.
We hope the truth will come out in courts of law, or congressional inquiry…
But even after the final decision, there is always that nagging doubt… Can this person be trusted again?
Lord God, You who created us, and knows our imperfection,
Lord God, You who calls us to walk in newness of
life…
Help us not to give in to our worst instincts…
Help us to live with faithfulness and love. Amen.

*HYMN 282: “Living for Jesus”

THE LETTERS: Ephesians 3: 14-21 pg. 1018

SERMON: "Strengthening Inner Being”

*INVITATION HYMN 295: “Near to the Heart of God”

Decisions of faith are personal decisions. It is for us to choose if we will believe in God. Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions. When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church. If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
