*CALL TO WORSHIP                              Psalm 5: 1-8

Give ear to my words, O LORD; give heed to my sighing.

Listen to the sound of my cry, my Ruler and my God, for to you I pray.

O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice;

in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;

evil will not sojourn with you.

The boastful will not stand before your eyes;

you hate all evildoers.

You destroy those who speak lies;

the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house, I will bow down toward your holy temple in awe of you.

Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

We don't know who this Simon the Pharisee was…

or why he invited Jesus to take this place, probably of honor, at his table.

We don't know, at first, whether Jesus was upset at Simon's lack of hospitality…No water for his feet, no greeting kiss, no anointing.

But as Simon's condemnation of this woman begins, Jesus' feelings surface.

For Jesus the issue here is not hospitality…

            The issue is forgiveness and love.

The one who is forgiven much…

            Loves much!

Where does this leave people who have striven to be obedient… those who tried to do what is right?

            Obviously, not in the "catbird seat".

UNISON: Lord God, help us to walk in humble obedience...  Keep us from judging our neighbors… and those from the other side of the tracks… Make us ever mindful of Your grace in our life, Your grace available to all.  Amen.

*HYMN 2177:         "Wounded World that Cries for Healing"

Decisions of faith are personal decisions.  It is for us to choose if we will believe in God.  Decisions of faith are also public and corporate decisions.  When we choose to follow Jesus we are choosing to become part of the “Body of Christ”, the Church.  If you would like to confirm the decision you have made to begin your life of faith or continue that life as a part of this congregation, come forward as we sing the invitational hymn and speak with the worship leader about your decision.
