INTROIT:

*CALL TO WORSHIP

The lights are bright outside: in streets, in stores, and

in homes.

So why should we look for light in this dark hall?

Because, those lights outside will be darkened soon: decorations will come down, bulbs will burn out, power may be cut-off.

So, where is the light that will not fail?

Candle lighter:  Here we have a flame and candles!

UNISON:  Jesus Christ, light of the world, shine in this house, shine in our hearts, shine in the world through your spirit in and around us.

HEBREW BIBLE:         Micah 5: 1-5a                       pg. 805     read by: Ann Ray

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

Micah grew up in the hills south of Jerusalem, in a time of relative peace, but the times were changing.

Assyria was about to capture Israel and lay siege to Judah.

Like many small town people Micah didn’t see salvation coming from the big cities of Samaria or Jerusalem.

His hope lay in another small town, Bethlehem.

David had come from Bethlehem

But he had made Jerusalem into the city of David.

David believed in the success of centralized power in government and religion…

Micah appears to believe that power lies in the small town people of God.

UNISON: God of small beginnings, help us to trust that you can begin a great work, even in remote places, and in seemingly insignificant people.  Be born in us.  Amen.
