Praise the LORD! I wil= l give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in t= he congregation. Great are the works of the LORD,

studied by all who delight in them.

Full of honor and maje= sty is God’s work,

and the Lord’s righteousness endures forever.

God has gained renown = by his wonderful deeds;

the LORD is gracious and merciful.

God provides food for = those who live in awe;

The Lord is ever mindful of his covenant.

God has shown his peop= le the power of his works,

in giving them the heritage of the nations.

The works of the Lord’s hands are faithful and just;

all God’s precepts are trustworthy.

They are established f= orever and ever,

to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

God sent redemption to= his people; he has commanded his covenant forever.

Holy and awesome is God’s name.

The fear of the LORD i= s the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. <= o:p>

God’s praise endures forever.

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PR= AYER:

The people in Capernaum’s synagogue were “astonished at Jesus’ teaching,”

“for he taught them as one who had authority, and

not as the scribes.”

How was his teaching different? How did the scribes teach?

“Moses received Torah from Sinai and delivered it to

Joshua, and Joshua to the Elders, and the Elders to

the Prophets, and the Prophets delivered it to the

men of the Great Synagogue.”

That’s the way J= ewish tradition, in the “Sayings of the Fathers,” indicates learning = would be transmitted.

It was to be a matter of precedent, like our legal

system.

We struggle with peopl= e who dispense with tradition.

We call them eccentric… Hippies.

How can we trust peopl= e who call us to follow ways, which aren’t the old ways? How can we believe a teacher whose authority is not from Moses?

God who is always doing something new, there are so

many articulate people in this world whose teachings

appear to have new authority. Help u= s to know when that newness is a product of Your &nb= sp; Spirit.

Amen.
