CALL TO WORSHIP/LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLE

The lights are bright outside: in streets, in stores, and in homes.

So why should we look for light in this dark hall?

Because, those lights outside will be darkened soon: decorations will come down, bulbs will burn out, power may be cut-off.

          So, where is the light that will not fail?

Candle lighter:  Here I have a flame and a candle!

UNISON:  Jesus Christ, light of the world, shine in this house, shine in our hearts, shine in the world through your spirit in and around us.

*HYMN 82:                "Emmanuel"

RESPONSIVE CALL TO PRAYER:

Choosing to be a person of faith involves risks…

          “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.”

Like a wide receiver leaping to catch a pass over the middle…

          One lifting up their soul to God can be hit.

But what if no one was willing to risk being vulnerable?

What if there was no one willing to keep the covenant?

Lord help us to believe that in Your mercy You will forgive the transgressions of our youth.

Help us to trust that Your steadfast love and faithfulness will bring salvation in the end.  Amen.

SHARING THE BREAD                                              # 86

How silently, how silently The wondrous Gift is given!

So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven.

No ear may hear His coming, But in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive Him still,

The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us, we pray;

Cast out our sin, and enter in, Be born in us today!

We hear the Christmas angels, The great glad  tidings tell;

O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Immanuel!   Amen.

SHARING THE CUP                                                   # 76

O Come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer

our spirits by Thine advent here;

Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,

and death’s dark shadows put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee O Israel!

GREET EACH OTHER WITH THE PEACE OF CHRIST
