From the Pastor:
On
Monday, as is my usual habit, I got up around 6:00 a.m. and drove over to Mount
Pleasant to play golf. I told the
starter to put me on the list, and in about 10 minutes he called me off the
practice putting green to get a ticket.
When I came up to give him his copy of the ticket he said to me you can
go off with those fellows who are on the tee now. I joined the group of three other men. They were probably all in their early 40's, and from their
conversation it was obvious that they had all been friends for some time.
The three of them used electric
carts while I walked, so there was little discussion between me and my playing
partners. But, as I walked to the
second tee one of the others asked me, that question which always comes up,
"What do you do for a living?"
I told him I was a minister, and he gave me that usual, "Oh",
which always leaves me wondering what to say next… It probably also leaves them
wondering what to say as well… or what not to say. He did ask me what Church, and I told him.
After that nothing more was said
about my profession, until the tenth hole.
This time the remark came from another member of the foursome; from the
fellow who appeared to be the ringleader in this group of friends. He came up to me, after I had hit my second
shot up toward the green, and said "I heard you are a minister." I held my breath and waited for what was

going to come next,
and then he started in. My girl fiend
just found out she has throat cancer… She just had surgery and the doctor said
he hadn't gotten it all… She's 41 years old with two children… The most
beautiful girl in the world… We talked
at times over the next 9 holes about this situation. I told him if there was anything I could do please call.
Sunday August 1st will be
our congregation's 114th anniversary. For 114 years people have come to Calvary Baptist Church to sing
and pray, and work in and for missions, and meet with friends, and support each
other in joyous moments and the most difficult moments during life. How sad it is for me to know how many people
have no support system to help them relate to issues of ultimate concern…
faith… life and death things. I would
prefer to meet with you here at Calvary instead of the back nine at Mount
Pleasant. Only by practicing faith will
one be prepared for the difficult shots demanded on life's course.
