News From Calvary
From the Pastor:
At our Annual Missions Breakfast, last Sunday, John Schiavone, the
Executive Director of St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore, came to
speak with us about the broad range of ministries for the poor,
which are conducted by that charitable organization. As I indicated,
before the breakfast, it is rather strange to be having the Director
of a, laity run, Catholic-affiliated agency coming to address a
Baptist congregation, but as the morning progressed it became evident
that I had an ulterior mission for having John come to our breakfast.
Over the last eight or nine months a number of religious leaders
in the Baltimore County community have been discussing the issue
of a Day Resource Center. As St. Vincent de Paul has been running
Beans and Bread, a facility which meets much the same need in the
Fells Point Community, it seemed natural to approach St. Vincent
de Paul about directing the program we were considering. Their willingness
to consider taking this on gave us reason to further pursue this
idea.
Last April a committee began discussing possible sites for this
Day Program. In June we spoke with the leaders of Calvary and Trinity
Episcopal Church about using a building owned by Trinity, which
currently houses the Prologue program and moving that program to
Calvary's Church house. It was decided that this would not be feasible
because of the limitations and committed uses of these buildings.
In August John approached me with the idea of replacing the Bridgebuilders
Cabin and building a three story building which would mirror our
Educational Building. The foot print of this building would be larger
than that of the
Bridgebuilders Cabin and would be connected to the Educational Building
with an elevator which would be useable by both buildings.
This new building would increase the potential for the existing
Assistance Center of Towson Churches to minister by providing space
for showers and clothes washing as well as making space for people
to come and be off the streets. Here they would also be able to
receive assistance for job counseling (from Community Assistance
Network), physical & mental health needs could be met (Baltimore
County Health & Mental Health Departments as well as Prologue),
literacy and many more issues all could be addressed in this location.
The needs of homeless people cannot be addressed from 7:00p.m.-7:00a.m.
in a shelter where eating and sleeping are the greatest concern,
and when the workers from most helping agencies are not at work.
Through this center the religious communities of the County could
assist other agencies in Baltimore County meet the needs of our
neighbors.
Over the next month, what I would like you to do is to talk with
each other and me about this idea. There will be information on
the project posted in the Church. If you don't find the information
you want, please speak with me. We are planning to have a vote about
this project in our December 7th Congregational meeting.

BUDGET CONCERNS:
Every year at this time it seems we talk about budget concerns.
Currently, we are $18,442 behind what we estimated
we would receive in tithes and offerings. I put “we estimated”
in bold because we did estimate and project what we would receive.
What we need you to do is:
1. Check to see if you have given what you did pledge to the congregation,
and if you have not and you are able to make a gift, please do this
now.
2. Fill out a pledge card this month so our projection for next
year will be less of an estimate.
From the Deacon of Church Building Maintenance
Would you please look over the enclosed Work Sheet and let if us
know if you could work on one of our “Mini Work Day”
projects? Our Social Room is much improved by Fred & Ann Ray’s,
Melissa Hillman’s and Fred Weimert’s painting and “fix-up”,
and also by the installation of the new windows. Much more needs
to be done.
USHERS NEEDED
Calvary Church is reorganizing the Usher Committee under the leadership
of Joe Bradley. If you would like to serve as an usher, please return
the tear off to the Church.
