News From Calvary

From the Pastor:

The other day an editorial spoke of our need to awaken ourselves to the interconnectedness of our nation to the other nations of the world. In the editorial Thomas Friedman quoted from Nonzero, a book by Robert Wright. In the front of that book is a quotation from Charles Darwin (please excuse the sexist language… Darwin hadn't totally evolved): "As man advances in civilization, and small tribes are untied into larger communities, the simplest reason would tell each individual that he ought to extend his social instinct and sympathies to all the members of the same nation, though personally unknown to him. This point being once reached, there is only an artificial barrier to prevent his sympathies extending to the men of all nations and races."
As I am writing these words the Baltimore Orioles are playing the New York Yankees, and I am thinking what a difference a year can make. Last summer when the Yankees came to town we were filled with what Darwin had spoken of "social instinct and sympathies". The events of 9/11 had filled us with a great compassion for the people of New York City. Last year the Yankees were symbolically connected to the people who had suffered that great devastation, but this year they were just the "damn Yankees" again.
This morning as I looked at the paper there was an article about Edward Everett, the other man who spoke at Gettysburg, 140 years ago, on July 4, 1863. Reading some of Everett's words made me think of the simplicity of Lincoln's words on that July 4th… "Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure." In our nation there is such great inequity… one might easily question whether we can endure. In our world there is such great inequity… one might easily question whether we can endure.
Jesus, as far as I know, never used the word freedom in speaking, and he only used the word liberty once… He was quoting from Isaiah "…to proclaim liberty to the captives." Jesus was about liberating people, but this was not to be a liberation from caring for "the least of these, my children." As we celebrate Independence Day this year may we not forget our interdependence. UPCOMING EVENTS:

Words of Thanks
To Calvary Baptist Church,
Canton Baptist Church & Neighborhood Center wishes to thank the Pastor and Congregation for the non-perishable food that has been given to the Food Pantry. We truly appreciate that you took up the food collection for this ministry. We truly wish to thank the Church for their generosity in sharing with us here at Canton Baptist. The food that you donated will be used to help fill the emergency food bags for the needy here in the area.
Thanks again and may the Lord richly bless you and your Church because of your willingness to help others.
Dr. Lloyd G. Moss
Pastor/Director

Thank you for sending us a $640 check. We have put the money into our “Morris Endowment Fund”. The money from Calvary has built up our Morris Fund and it’s helping to get us closer to maturity.
Thank you again for remembering our ministry here in Thailand. Your gift means a lot for us here. It gives us the encouragement, which is needed; it also answers our prayers for support.
May the Lord Continue to bless you and your ministry. Please confer our thankful heart to your congregation.
In His Service,
Chaiwat Chawmuangman
